The Next Generation Social Networking

Everybody know Facebook, Friendster, Linkedin, Hi5, Twitter or MySpace or at the enterprise level like salesforce.com?. The existence of social networking applications has almost exists to personal user or the company. A statistic from research-write in December 2009, that quoted from comScore stated that growth of a social networking site from 2007 until 2008 has increased significantly.

The number of social networking sites and number of has growth rapidly. In 2007 to 2008. We could see that Facebook has became the highest ranked then Myspace. Sadly, this data was not included Twitter since its became “Trending” in Indonesia .Its became trending since most of Jakarta citizens uses Twitter for traffic monitoring facilities of Jakarta Police Traffic (TMC Polda Metro Jaya)

Growth based on the ranking of Social Networking Sites

In terms of social networking users ,Asia Pacific region has increased very rapidly compared to other regions. Europe and North America were only in the second and third position. This indicates that there was a decreased instead; it’s spread throughout the world.

In a year users in North America has grown 9% compared to 25% of total worldwide overall. While in the Middle East region – Africa grew 66%, Europe 35% and 33% in Latin America over the previous year.

Social Networking Growth based on Regions

What is interesting as the above title is “What is the next-generation Social Networking?”. Maybe some readers here had the same thought, what the site after Facebook, Twitter and so on which will become a killer application?. Ok lets talk the fact , here the component that making an social networking become to;

1. Networking Social Modeling
2. The Media
3. Audiences
4. Penetration

1. Social Networking Modeling

The technology in use by Facebook and MySpace is the Walled Garden where the content or exclusive content to the site and only have a little interaction with the outside world to the whole internet. Users of Facebook or MySpace do not have such a way to interact with one another which differ from actual Internet concept that was initially interacting between the locations. This becomes interesting if the users of MySpace or Facebook could not add a users or friends into their lists.

2. Social Media Networking
Who accessed a social networking site is currently still dominated by netbooks and Desktop users, while the penetration of mobile devices such as smart phones, Ipad, Blackberry has became personalized in the sense that almost 90% have used mobile devices in the activity.

3. Audience or Users
Users of Social Networking should be borderless and should not differs based on ages, jobs, social status or education strata. With Mobile Penetration at very affordable new generation is also very helpful.

4. Penetration
Based on the survey from Nielsen institutions in Kompas ,quoted on 8 December 2009 shown that internet penetration in Indonesia itself has been increased in 2009 reached 17% of the total population or increased twice compared to 2005 which is only about 8%. This means that the penetration of the internet went further compared to earlier periods.

The result of “The Next Generation Social Killer Application” is actually an distributed applications, the concept had been already exists and is quite simple. You might know the OpenID in the email application to answer the problem of distributed multiple logins. Isn’t it ?

For an example : aan.kasman @ gmail.com will automatically become an OpenID to login to some social networking sites. Communication between sites is only a simple http communication with XML or Javascript. So the request of friends or friends of interaction request, the message becomes very easily and smoothly distributed. There are several aspects of concern such as security, privacy etc but I am sure this can be overcome and of course the concern and caution from the user itself.
So my conclusion is “The distributed social networking” will become a killer “Next Generation Social Networking applications”.

So, what do you think? ….
